| MEASURES EACH SPECK BY SIZE AND REFLECTIVITY |
|
|
| System Description |
| The Apogee Systems Inc. Spec*Scan 2000/2001 gray scale image analyzer for pulp, paper, and paperboard production sample analysis, measures, counts, and sorts specks, dirt, residual ink, pulp shives, printed patterns, and other objects that optically contrast with the paper substrate by their size and reflectivity. The measurement of both size and reflectivity is necessary to emulate TAPPI T - 437 which states the estimated equivalent black area of a gray or colored speck is smaller than its actual area in inverse proportion to the intensity of its color contrast with its background (Para 3.2). |
| Within user defined reflectivity and size classifications, Spec*Scan calculates, cumulative speck area, PPM, speck count, average gray scale value, and the darkest pixel (picture element). To emulate dirt count systems, the user can configure the histogram labels and size ranges. |
| Spec*Scan uses a simple but effective statistical method to quantify differences in formation quality by analyzing the frequency distribution of the gray scale value of each pixel in the specimen sample image obtained in the light transmission mode. |

OPERATING MODES: |
| |
Spec*Scan 2000 analytical, which presents the operator a full gray scale specimen sheet image for manipulation and analysis using the gray scale analysis tools and is used to set the measurement parameters for the production mode. All set-up parameters are displayed on a single screen. Reverse threshold for measuring objects lighter than the background, data base management, and image zooms to 1:64 are included. |
| |
Spec*Scan 2001 mill operations, runs rapidly using the parameters set in the analytical mode to quickly display and print out the critical measurements as numbers and does not permit measurement parameter changes. The automatic data base manager can record all measurements for subsequent review. |
| |
In both operating modes, test data can be automatically transferred to a local area network server. |
